Happy Moments for Refugee Kids

Ms Melinda Looi is conducting a creative workshop with the refugee children.

It was a morning of fun and laughter for the refugee kids in Shelter school for refugees in Puchong last Tuesday. A creative workshop led by fashion designer Melinda Looi and her team was a day of new creations. The 47 kids had their turn in creating their own t-shirts, necklaces, bracelets, brooches and even angklets.

Ms Melinda Looi is explaining how the creative to be done.

The Truly Loving Company (TLC) working with Charity partner Shelter organized a session of fun creative workshops for kids who are aged 7 onwards. This event was created in conjunction with TLC's second donation of RM10,000 to Shelter.

For the younger kids below 7 yrs old, there was face painting to keep them occupied. Melinda Looi with her team of volunteers had a very busy morning teaching the girls and boys how to make their own accessories.

SHELTER is a registered, voluntary welfare organization for children and teenagers who have been abandoned, neglected, orphaned or abused. Shelter's commitment is to provide care and protection for children in need and at risk. In the course of their mission, schools for refugee children as well as the immigration detention centres and youth centres are where Shelter also plays a big role. Shelter also proactively raise public awareness on child abuse, child protection, parenting and youth issues, and equip individuals with relevant skills to detect signs of abuse and to take action.

"The children are so excited and seem not to get enough. Apart from learning a new skill to create something nice for themselves which is really rare, it is also a break from their normal routine in the school, "says Anderson Selvasegaram, manager of Shelter

The children is creating their own necklaces, bracelets or brooches.

Julia Chong, Founder and CEO of TLC, explained that the RM10, 000 donation was part of TLC's long term mission and commitment in supporting its Charity Partners. "By creating an event with each of our charity partners, we get to understand the work and the challenges that our partners face, and that gives us greater motivation to drive our mission. We hope the creative workshops will bring some fun and joy to these refugee children whose future is still uncertain" commented Julia Chong, Founder and CEO of The Truly Loving Company.

Shelter, Home for Children is one of TLC's five charity partners that is entitled to receive the dividends. TLC's revenue is derived from sales of the TLC brand of quality household and personal care products such as dishwashing liquid, floor and toilet bowl cleaners, shower crèmes and hand & body lotions in retail outlets and hypermarkets such as Giant, Tesco, Jusco, Carrefour and Cold Storage.
