Date Established and Background
Incorporated in 1991, Hospis Malaysia is a charitable organisation that provides palliative care and medicine at absolutely no cost to anyone who lives within the Klang Valley and who has a life-limiting illness regardless of type. What palliative care and medicine does is to achieve the best possible quality of life for patients and their families by helping to reduce the severity of their physical, psychological, psychosocial, and spiritual symptoms.
This forms the core of Hospis Malaysia’s service where its doctors and nurses visit patients at their (patients’) homes to administer palliative care and medicine. Approximately 600-700 home visits are made each month by its palliative care team of 14 staff which include doctors, nurses, a pharmacist, a clinical psychologist and an occupational therapist. Hospis Malaysia also has a 24-hour on-call service that attends to emergencies at any time. Patients can also loan medical equipment from Hospis Malaysia at no charge.
Provides an outlet for patients to be treated and reviewed in a daycare setting where they are able to socialize, and enjoy varied therapeutic activities. Meals, physiotherapy, review of symptoms and transportation (where necessary) are provided free-of-charge. The Day Care centre is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays and is managed by a palliative care doctor, a palliative care nurse and volunteers.
Training & Education
As a recognized training provider in the field of palliative care and medicine, Hospis Malaysia trains and educates members of the medical circle via its many workshops, lectures (at medical and nursing schools), attachment programs, and its involvement in medical and scientific meetings. Hospis Malaysia also has its own international teaching faculty which adds weight to the credibility of its training & educational programs.
